In-Mates: A Story of Second Chances

Some stories don’t just unfold. They transform everyone involved.

Some stories don’t just unfold. They transform everyone involved — and everyone watching. In-Mates is a documentary that follows the emotional bond formed between rescue dogs and incarcerated women, as part of a pioneering program by the non-profit Save A Greek Stray.

Tell a deeply human story that captures the emotional journey of both people and animals, within the unique setting of a women’s prison.

Filmed over several months inside the Women’s Prison of Eleona in Thebes, the documentary captures the daily rhythms, the small breakthroughs, and the quiet trust that gradually builds between two worlds seeking healing.

Toska, Montecristo, Charlize, and Richard. Antonia and Katerina. On paper, they come from very different realities. In practice, they’re walking the same path — learning, adapting, and trying to let go of what came before.

HÄST undertook the full production of the film, from direction and filming to editing and narrative development. With minimal interference and a documentary lens that respects both space and silence, we allowed real moments to unfold. No actors. No scripts. Just people and animals, facing each other honestly.

The result is a tender portrait of change. A reminder that trust takes time. That second chances don’t always arrive wrapped in grand gestures, but in everyday interactions.

In-Mates was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival in 2020. But more importantly, it became part of the conversation around rehabilitation, empathy, and what it really means to move forward.
